Student engagement strategies are changing continuously. Earlier, in a conventional classroom setup, students would passively take notes while the teacher would lectures in front of the class. At best, these lectures would include visual aids and at worst, they would repeat the assigned text with little interaction between students and the teachers—or between the students themselves.

Now, educators are being encouraged to have more emphasis on the participation and interest of the students in the class. Engaged students will be more inquisitive about the subject — perhaps even more passionate about it. Increasing engagement will help develop independent learners), boost student learning, their progress and achievements.

In a classroom that focuses on engagement, students are asked to participate in their own learning process and sometimes even in course design. Traditional lectures have not disappeared from the classroom, but they now incorporate multimedia, technology and class participation

Teaching strategies can be used by every facilitator to increase student engagement. This includes simple changes that can be made in your class which will completely revamp the curriculum, course delivery and assessment methodology. Here are some actionable student-centred learning strategies starting from simple to complex.

Student Engagement Strategies

1. Active Learning: Create a teaching and learning environment primed for student participation, such as Individual Reflection Exercises, Think-Pair-Share, Hot Seat, Inside- Outside circle and Group Problem Solving.

2. Participatory Teaching: This student-centred approach takes into account different skills, backgrounds and learning styles of students. The focus of participatory teaching is on self-regulation and self-reflection of one’s own learning; specific strategies include using different teaching methods and varieties of assessment techniques.

3. Flip classroom: Teacher flips the traditional lecture-homework relationship. Students study the subject matter independently through tools such as pre-recorded videos. Class is then spent on student-centred learning such as solving problems, debating or group related work.

4. Technology driven classroom: Students expect to be constantly connected and want immediate feedback. Online technology provides engaging learning activities to keep students engaged inside the classroom. Blended learning can also be incorporated to break the monotony of the class.

5. Use simulations: Games and Role playing place students in an imaginary setting defined by the facilitator, providing for an interactive, participatory and engaging learning experience.
